As we approach the first day of summer, we hear readings today that are set in nature. Ezekiel has a vision of God cutting a tender shoot from the top of a cedar and planting it on a mountain where it grows into a majestic tree. The Gospel of Mark relates tow of Jesus’ parables involving sowing seeds, one being the tiny mustard seed, which grows into a shady, hearty plant. As we listen to the readings today, may the Lord’s word take root in us.

We return to Sundays in Ordinary Time. We have been in Ordinary Time for the weekday liturgies since the Monday after Pentecost. Ordinary Time is a time that falls outside the major holy seasons of the year: Easter, Christmas, Advent, and Lent. It is not just the absence of a major season any more that our lives are ordinary on days that are not holidays. Ordinary Time forms the foundation of the liturgical year. It comprises almost two-thirds of the calendar.
Today, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, Corpus Christi. In today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus tell us, “This is my body…This is my blood.” There are many reasons people give for no longer going to church. There is one great reason to attend. It is here as a community of believers we receive the most precious and sacred gifts from our God this side of heaven. It is here we receive the most sacred gift of Jesus in the Eucharist.
