Today is the first Sunday of Advent, which is also the first Sunday of a new liturgical year for the Church. The Advent season includes the four Sundays that precede Christmas. It is a time of preparation for the coming of the Lord. In this season, we recall two central elements of our faith: the final coming of the Lord in glory and the incarnation of the Lord in the birth of Jesus. Key themes of the Advent season are watchful waiting, preparation, and justice.
The second collection today is for the Building Maintenance Fund.
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be on Wednesday, December 4 th . Adoration begins at 1:00 P.M. and concludes with Benediction at 6:00 P.M. The Advent season is a good time for us to spend some quiet time with the Lord in Eucharistic Adoration before we get “caught up” in the busyness of the holiday season.
Every year the Msgr. Eyraud Knights of Columbus Council 2436 offers a Senior Citizens Luncheon free to all senior citizens. The luncheon this year is on Friday, December 6. Look in the bulletin for further information for tickets.
Next weekend, the second collection will be for the Retirement Fund for Religious. Many senior Catholic Sisters, Brothers, and Religious Order Priests served for little or no pay. Today, religious communities often do not have enough savings to meet the retirement needs of its community members. Many religious communities have merged with other communities, like the case of our own Dominican Sisters of St. Mary. Others have sold their Motherhouses and moved into retirement/nursing homes. Your support of this special second collection helps provide medications, nursing care, and more for tens of thousands of elderly religious women and men.
