The Christmas-Epiphany season concludes today with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Before Jesus began preaching, teaching, and healing, He came to John to be baptized. Jesus was not baptized because He was sinful, but to signify His union with sinful humanity. The Spirit of God descended upon Jesus and God’s voice called out, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” As Christians baptized with the Holy Spirit, we are empowered to carry on Jesus’ mission.
The week of Prayer for Christian Unity begins on Saturday, January 18th and concludes on Saturday, January 25th. It has a history of over 100 years in which Christians around the world have taken part in prayer for Christian unity. By annually observing the Weeks of Prayer for Christian Unity, Christians move toward the fulfillment of Jesus’ prayer at the Last Supper “that they all may be one” (John 17:21).
The second collection next weekend, January 18-19, will be for the Church Roof.
