We return to Sundays in Ordinary Time. We have been in Ordinary Time for the weekday liturgies since the Monday after Pentecost. Ordinary Time is a time that falls outside the major holy seasons of the year: Easter, Christmas, Advent, and Lent. It is not just the absence of a major season any more that our lives are ordinary on days that are not holidays. Ordinary Time forms the foundation of the liturgical year. It comprises almost two-thirds of the calendar.
Most of the Gospel readings during Ordinary Time in Cycle B are taken from the Gospel of Saint Mark. Mark wrote his Gospel as a dramatic story with Jesus at the center. Jesus is always moving, inviting his disciples –and us—to follow. Mark wanted those who heard or read his Gospel to come to understand Jesus and recognize him as the Son of God.
