Today, we begin the annual observance of National Catholic Schools Week. As a parish, we recognize the value of Catholic education. St. Peter School has been educating the youth of the River Parish area for ninety (90) years. The theme for Catholic Schools Week is “Catholic Schools: Learn, Lead, and Succeed.” The official CSW logo brings the theme to life. The open book made up of multi-colored pages symbolizes how all areas of Catholic Schools blend together, with faith—symbolized by the cross—at the forefront. Catholic schools are vibrant, dynamic, and excellent.
The second collection today is for the Champions for Catholic education of the Archdiocese.
In September 2019, Pope Francis issued an Apostolic Letter instituting the Third (3 rd ) Sunday in Ordinary Time as Sunday of the Word of God. It will be an annual observance in order to help us grow in a deeper appreciation of the Sacred Scriptures. As Pope Francis says in the letter, “Devoting a specific Sunday of the liturgical year to the Word of God can enable the Church to experience anew how the risen Lord opens for us the treasury of His Word and enables us to proclaim its unfathomable riches before the world.”
The second collection next weekend, February 1-2, 2020 will be for St. Peter School.
