The Church began the first season of Ordinary Time last Monday. It will continue until Mardi Gras Day, February 25 th . “Since the liturgical reform, the longest part of the liturgical year is called “Ordinary Time.” It is the thirtythree or thirty-four weeks in which no particular aspect of the mystery of Christ is celebrated, but rather the mystery of Christ itself is honored in its fullness, especially on Sundays.” [Universal Norms, # 43]
Each year on the Second and Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Gospel is proclaimed from the Gospel of John instead of Matthew’s Gospel. The purpose of this choice is to place Ordinary Time in continuity with the manifestation of the Lord, celebrated at Epiphany and at the Baptism of the Lord. The passage from John speaks of the witness given to Jesus by John the Baptist. (Days of the Lord, p. 21)
The second collection this weekend is for the Church Roof.
First Reconciliation will be celebrated on Saturday, January 25, 2020. Please keep our second graders who will be receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation in your prayers.
The second collection next weekend, January 25- 26 will be for the support of the Champions of Catholic Education. Please read the Archbishop’s letter in today’s bulletin insert.
